Grammatical Problems ofIidioms Translation

Weshall now take a close look at some peculiarities ofidiomatic expressions. An important fact that must be underlined is that phrasal verbs are not only colloquial phrases, as plenty of people think. They may emerge in formal style and in slang. They may appear in verse or in the masterpieces of Shakespeare and the Bible.
Idioms are used widely, that is why an experienced Russian translator is simply obliged to master certain techniques for translation of idioms from English to Russian, and for their translation from Russian to English.
What, then, is an idiom? We can say that an idiom is some collocation of phrases which, taken in the same place, mean something unique from the separate phrases of the idiom when they are placed separately. The way in which the phrases are put together is sometimes weird, strange or in some cases grammatically incorrect. These are the special features of some idiomatic expressions. Other idiomatic expression are completely regular and logical in their grammar and vocabulary. Due to the special properties of certains idiomatic expressions, we shall study the idiomatic expressions as a whole and we sometimes cannot change any part of it (except maybe, only the tense of the verb).
English language is very rich in idioms. In fact, it is hard to speak or write English language without using idioms. An English native speaker is very often not aware that he is using an idiom; perhaps he does not even realize that an idiom which he implements is grammatically incorrect. A non-native learner makes the correct use of idiomatic English one of his main goals, and the fact that some idioms are illogical or grammatically wrong causes him difficulty. Only careful study and exact learning will help.
It is impossible to be explained why a particular idiom has developed an unusual arrangement or choice of words. The idiom has been fixed by long usage as is often seen from the vocabulary.
